Well, kids, it’s that time of year again. The leaves are changing colors, the temperatures are cooling down and Facebook is changing once again. However, this season, these changes are going to be a little more dramatic.
Behold, the Facebook profile we all know too well will be dramatically different in, perhaps, just a few weeks. In case you haven’t heard by now, Facebook is rolling out a new feature called “Timeline”. Rather than having a standard day-by-day “wall” there is now a yearbook for your life. That’s right, now your Facebook page just became a lot more personal, and creeping can now go further than we ever dreamed.
Let’s face it. The people least expecting these changes are going to be pissed off. At least half of your Facebook friends will make angry statuses. I’ll even go as far as to say that a few of your friends will “deactivate” their accounts and boycott Facebook, only to reactivate it days later. Lawsuits will be filed against Facebook (there’s already one ongoing over the use of the word “Timeline”). Media outlets will criticize Zuckerberg and his army for making Facebook less private. Alas, Facebook will be scrutinized.
But I have three words for you critics out there: Get over it. No one is forcing you to have a Facebook. If you really are too upset to accept the changes then leave. Facebook is a free, private company. And like any other company in America, it is subject to change. I, being an obsessed social media geek, have been able to test out the new Facebook timeline (with some help from mashable.com). And these changes are awesome!
The new profiles are more personalized and custom. Rather than having just statuses, you can mark life events such as a wedding or getting a new job. Also, more information can be displayed in the two-column setup. More importantly, you can literally go back to any month and year you’d like and find out what that person was doing on that day. Sure, it’s more personal, but it will discourage people from adding random people who they may have met at a party once. Facebook, I believe, is now truer to its name. I mean, how cool is it that you can look back on events that have really shaped your life? The only thing that makes me angry about this Timeline is that it wasn’t out sooner, so I feel like I’m already 18 years behind on important times in my life.
Another awesome feature is the Maps feature. Now, whenever you update your profile, it marks your location so that eventually it’ll show every place you’ve visited, or at least posted from. Now people can see that you had a family vacation in South Carolina in 2010. Sure, the profile is a lot different, but it’s also a whole lot cooler.
The bottom line is this: Your profile is going to change. Rather than dwell on the fact, embrace the new changes. Explore what this new profile has to offer. And if you don’t like what Facebook has to offer anymore, there’s always MySpace.
