For the second time in less than a year, comments on the MU [Facebook page](http://www.facebook.com/Mizzou) have made all of us at the university look intolerant and uneducated.
As a refresher, some commenters [hid behind computer screens last year](https://www.themaneater.com/stories/2011/4/29/debacle-highlights-mus-facebook-transparency-conwa/) to divulge their intolerant views of E. Patrick Johnson speaking for Pride Month. Thursday, the same unfortunate event almost repeated itself.
In an effort to promote this week’s Islam Awareness Week, the page posted a link to the Muslim Student Organization’s page. The comments that followed included statements such as, “I’m aware of Islam 911.”
Before the commenters impulsively posted hateful comments, they should have at least taken the time to actually attend the events and educate themselves on what they’re complaining about.
Still, we believe this is a wider issue than just the 20 or so people who posted on the page. As a whole, the campus is quite tolerant.
But tolerance isn’t enough.
When we’re only following what we believe to be “politically correct,” we’re not becoming more understanding or integrated with other cultures. There is too much apathy among college students toward these important issues. MU has great resources to promote diversity and makes a valiant effort, but this effort almost always falls upon the deaf ears of the student body.
Educators are holding events and making an effort to make this less of an issue, but a very select group of students actually attend these events. Almost always, these students are the ones who are proactive and have already educated themselves.
As a student, part of your fees go toward the diverse groups on campus. At the very least, this should provide some form of incentive to attend the events and learn a thing or two. Set aside a chunk of time and actually attend an event one of our many social justice student organizations take the time to plan. Visit the resources on campus for some additional education.
And if you seriously need more of incentive, there’s almost always free stuff involved.
