In response to a recent article published in The Maneater entitled, “[Black, gold and green: MU recycling efforts pay off](https://www.themaneater.com/stories/2011/10/14/black-gold-and-green-mu-recycling-efforts-pay/),” it is important to point out that while our efforts are admirable, recycling at Mizzou should be more successful than it currently is. As stated in the article, there are 8,108 tons of waste at Mizzou per year and only 31 percent of it is being recycled. The fact that 59 percent of the waste at Mizzou is going to landfills is unacceptable and should be decreased. In St. Louis, residents were given waste receptacles and recycling instructions. This proactive step proved successful in lowering landfill waste in St. Louis. Providing students and Mizzou tailgaters with recycling receptacles would be an effective way to decrease the waste currently going into landfills from our campus. Our campus is making great strides, but we still have a long way to go.
