Ohio farmers to donate 30,000 pounds of pork for National Pork Month
Ohio University – Tuesday the Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks received an enormous quantity of pork. Several hog farmers in Ohio, all part of the Ohio Pork Producers Council, donated a total of 30,000 pounds of pork as a part of the Pork Power Program.
The program, established in 2009, is designed to help feed hungry Ohio residents. With this most recent donation, the total pork donated to the OASHF has reached 120,000 pounds.
“We really appreciate Farm Credit and our other industry partners who have supported our efforts,” OPPC Director of Marketing and Education Jennifer Keller said in a news release.
This pork donation was assisted by a virtual event held on Facebook by OPPC and Farm Credit Services of Mid-America. This event was in effect through the month of October and was dubbed National Pork Month. Every person who said they were attending would equal another meal of pork donated by Farm Credit Services of Mid-America, which pushed the total to 30,000 pounds.

State government passes ban on texting while driving
Penn State University – After gaining overwhelming support from both the state House and Senate, texting while driving will no longer be allowed in Pennsylvania.
Those caught texting while driving will be pulled over by a law officer and fined $50 under Senate Bill 314, which passed Tuesday. The legislation prohibits drivers from sending, reading and writing text-based communication while driving — meaning that texting from cell phones, smart phones, portable computers, mobile computers or similar devices while driving is banned.
With the legislation, Pennsylvania will become the 35th state to have banned texting while driving. While many other states have different laws regarding handheld device use while driving, only nine other states ––including the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands –– have completely banned the use of all handheld devices while driving, prohibiting the driver from dialing or receiving phone calls in addition to texting and all other uses of the device.
The Pennsylvania House passed the bill Monday with a vote of 188-7 before the Senate passed the bill with a vote of 45-5 Tuesday. The bill is now waiting to be signed by Gov. Tom Corbett, where it will take effect around March.

Alcohol policy checks target greek, campus residential sites
University of Oklahoma – When OU’s dry-campus alcohol policy was enacted in spring 2005, an alcohol checks system to hold all student campus residents accountable was also implemented by the university.
These unannounced alcohol checks consist of non-student workers checking the public areas of fraternity houses for any signs of alcohol use — strictly forbidden in any Greek house or residence hall, as well as the surrounding area, according to the university’s dry campus policy.
“The general procedure is unannounced checks — a check of the public areas and verification that there aren’t any large parties or alcohol,” said Clarke Stroud, vice president for Student Affairs and dean of Students.
The checks are performed every week, but can only be conducted from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Thursday night through Sunday morning. Workers check an average of 10 of 14 greek fraternity houses during that span.
The aim of the alcohol checks and strike policy is not to punish students for partaking in alcohol but to curb the dangerous parties that occurred prior to the policy implementation, Stroud said.
