It seems like Netflix and the general public’s relationship is going through a very, very rough patch. With the recent split of streaming and mailing DVDs, price changes and the recent plummeting stock, it sort of seems like we’re in this big, marriage-ending fight and the public is yelling “you’re not the Netflix I fell in love with!” and Netflix is all teary-eyed and screaming back, “But you wanted me to change! I changed for _you_.” And that goes on for a little bit until the public runs out the door, starts the car and drives off.
So now there’s two points of action:
The first is to keep driving, don’t look back and start a new life and try to forget all those good times and sweet memories we shared with Netflix. All those times when our dates fell through and the only friends we had was a tub of ice cream and a deep red screen; all those times when we invited friends over and spent an hour deciding which show to watch in the Instant Queue; all those times when we snuggled up with a cute crush and watched some documentary about seahorses.
The second is to turn the car around and reconcile the differences. Yes, Netflix has changed and yes, things are different, but some of these changes are for the better. Jon Hamm’s pretty face can be seen whenever now thanks to Mad Men and other AMC shows now popping up in instant streaming. There are cons to every relationship and nobody can ever really stay the same, but there will always be the good qualities. The ones that made us fall in love with Netflix in the first place. They’re still there, it’s just looks a little different.
So what route will the public take? Two million have already hit the road thanks to the plan splitting and price changes, but I’m definitely staying. I think it’s fairly clear I’m still totally head-over-heels in love with Netflix. I never would have even gotten to the car. I wouldn’t have even got in a fight. The worst I thing I would have done would have been a snarky comment over dinner. That’s it. Because Netflix has done nothing but try to entertain me and that’s all I really want, even if it comes at a little higher price.
Oh, and the title is just a reminder to go watch “V for Vendetta” this Saturday.
