As the Republican presidential campaign continues to make headlines, President Barack Obama is using this time to campaign to his largest group of constituents – the young voters.
On Wednesday, Obama for America’s Greater Together Initiative hosted the first of monthly calls out of its Chicago headquarters to update youth on the state of the 2012 presidential race, including highlighting Obama’s accomplishments.
“I’m sure you’ve noticed on your campuses and your communities, the president kept his word,” Obama’s Youth Vote Director Valeisha Butterfield-Jones said. “The war in Iraq has come to a responsible end, and our troops made it home from Iraq in time for the holidays.”
In addition to ending the war in Iraq, Butterfield-Jones pointed out Obama’s success with the Affordable Care Act, making healthcare more available to people under the age of 26, and his creation of 180,000 summer jobs for low-income and disconnected youth for the summer of 2012.
As an attempt to hold onto the youth vote, the Greater Together campaign will be making stops on 10 different college campuses to hear directly from the students.
“Young people are greater together and the power of our generation, your generation, will impact what happens on November 6, 2012,” Butterfield-Jones said.
The Greater Together Initiative representatives explained Obama’s accomplishments as president, and they were also quick to point out negative thoughts on the Republican candidates.
Deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter specifically focused on former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.
“Mitt Romney thinks he can play by his own rules,” Cutter said. “He thinks the middle class should be burdened by higher taxes and to be honest, he’ll say anything to get elected.”
She also focused on the fact he refused to release his tax returns until Jan. 24, when he only released his tax return from one year.
“When he wanted to be vice president to John McCain, he turned over to (McCain) 23 years of tax returns,” Cutter said. “Unfortunately, now he wants to be president, and he’s only giving one year of tax returns.”
Cutter said it’s not known where Romney is hiding his money, and went on to critique Romney’s opinions on further political issues.
“(Romney) called Roe v. Wade one of the darkest revisions in Supreme Court history,” Cutter said. “He said he would veto the Dream Act and call for a repeal for the Affordable Care Act. He also said it’s OK for millionaires and billionaires to pay lower taxes than the middle class.”
As campaigning for the election continues, the Greater Together Initiative will continue to update youth voters monthly on the state of Obama’s race and the positions of his opponents.
