Watching the commercials is as much a part of the Super Bowl experience as watching the actual football game is. After further review, I have made my call. Here are the ads that scored and the ads that fumbled.
**The MVP Award**: Honda – “Matthew’s Day Off”
The standout ad of this year’s Super Bowl was both classic and clever. Matthew Broderick channeled his legendary role as Ferris Bueller, this time as himself playing hooky from work. Compared to the countless other car commercials that used sex appeal and other cliché gimmicks, Broderick’s tribute to his school-skipping days earned him an A+.
**Most Likely to Make Your Disinterested Girlfriend Look up at the TV for the First Time All Night**: H&M – “David Beckham Bodywear”
David Beckham. In Underwear. ‘Nuff said.
**Most Likely to Make a Guy Forget about Football for Five Seconds**: Teleflora – “Give”
Victoria’s Secret Angel Adriana Lima starred in not one, but two Super Bowl ads this year. And it’s easy to see why. The gorgeous supermodel clearly captured the attention of every viewer with a Y-chromosome as she dressed herself and put on makeup before offering males some suggestive advice for Valentine’s Day: “Give and you shall receive.”
**Best Attempt at Being As Inappropriate As Janet Jackson’s Halftime Performance**: GoDaddy.com – “Body Paint”
There was no wardrobe malfunction in this performance—GoDaddy.com knew exactly what it was doing when it decided to feature hot, naked women in its ads. But how putting body paint on a nude woman is supposed to compel me to buy my own website domain name is beyond me. If it can’t start coming up with better ideas, GoDaddy needs to GoAway.
**Most Likely to Make You Want to Kick LMFAO in the Bal. . .Shins**: M&M’s – “It’s That Kind of Party” / Bud Light – “LMFAO Half-Time”
This one’s a toss-up. Both commercials featured so-called “music” and/or an appearance from the electropop duo. Both commercials also made me want to throw up my plate of five-layer dip and chips. Coincidence? I think not. If you’re going to waste $3.5 million for a 30-second spot to endorse a product, at least use celebrities who have accomplished more than sporting barely-there Speedos and gravity-defying afros.
**Most Likely to Make You Turn Down the Volume**: Volkswagen – “The Bark Side Teaser”
Why this is currently the No. 1 most-liked ad on Hulu is beyond me. I literally sat through it wishing Kanye West could magically interrupt the commercial. If I wanted to listen to a bunch of dogs barking nonstop for sixty seconds, I would have switched over to the Puppy Bowl. The only dogs that should be a part of Super Bowl Sunday are hot dogs and dog piles.
