The MU Police Department is investigating an armed robbery southwest of Memorial Union.
A male student was robbed at gunpoint Thursday at about 1:53 a.m., according to a Clery release.
The suspect was described as a male in his late 20s or early 30s, between 5 feet, 6 inches and 5 feet, 8 inches tall with a heavier build. He was wearing dark blue jeans and a light grey hoodie, which possibly had the lettering “MIZZOU” on the front. He was last seen running north along Hitt Street near the Fine Arts Building.
MUPD Capt. Brian Weimer said armed robbery is not common on the MU campus.
He said the way to protect oneself from robbery is the same as most other crimes. Precautions include walking in pairs, not taking shortcuts behind buildings, walking in well-lit areas and not walking with headphones in.
“You can do everything right and still be the victim of a crime,” Weimer said. “There’s nothing to say the individual in this case did anything wrong.”
There have been no updates or arrests, but MUPD is still looking for a suspect. Anyone with information is requested to call detective Sam Easley at 573-884-3721 or, to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 573-857-8477.
