The Missouri women’s tennis team made two victories in a row Sunday when it defeated Saint Louis 7-0. The win gives the Tigers a wining percentage above .500 for the first time this season, as they moved to 4-3.
“It was great,” freshman Alex Clark said. “We all fought hard, came through in tough times and accomplished what we wanted to.”
In No. 1 singles, Missouri senior Nina Pantic won her second singles match of the weekend as she handled Jenny Nalepa (6-2, 6-4).
Missouri sophomore No. 77 Rachel Stuhlmann moved up to the No. 2 singles slot Sunday and easily defeated Stephanie Hollis (6-1, 6-1). Stuhlmann has now won nine of her first ten singles matches this season.
In the No. 3 slot, Missouri senior Jamie Mera won a tough three-set battle against Saint Louis’ Mia Elmore (6-3, 4-6, 6-3).
Clark, playing in the No. 4 position, won her fifth singles match in a row when she defeated Brooke Urzendowski with relative ease (6-2, 6-2).
Junior Annemijn Koenen earned Missouri a victory in the No. 5 position, as she topped Saint Louis’ Maria Toro Moreno (6-3, 6-1).
And rounding out the singles matches, in the No. 6 slot, Missouri freshman Ashleigh Chiaf defeated Madeline Jolly (6-4, 6-0).
“I think we did really well in singles,” Stuhlmann said. “Everybody stuck with the game plan, so we’re happy.”
Following the team’s 6-1 victory over Illinois State on Friday, coach Sasha Schmid mentioned how she wanted her players to perform better in doubles matches, and they responded Sunday by earning victories in all three of them.
In No. 1 doubles, the Missouri senior combination of Pantic and Mera handled Saint Louis’ Nalepa and Toro Moreno 8-3.
In the second position, Missouri’s duo of Stuhlmann and Koenen prevailed 8-2 over Hollis and Elmore 8-2.
And in the final doubles match to be completed, in the No. 3 slot, Missouri’s Clark and Chiaf were too much for Saint Louis’ Urzendowski and Jolly, beating them 8-4.
Schmid said she was pleased with the Tigers’ performance this time around.
“I think they played much better doubles today,” Schmid said. “We executed better, were aggressive from the beginning and didn’t make as many unforced errors.”
The Tigers enter a tough part of their schedule starting next weekend, and Schmid said she is glad they enter it with confidence.
“It’s good for us to continue to build momentum,” Schmid said. “It brings us a lot of confidence. We feel great about winning, and would much rather go into next weekend after one like this.”
That weekend has the Tigers going on the road to Minneapolis to face Minnesota on Friday and Virginia Tech on Saturday.
