One man is dead after a shooting Sunday afternoon at the 300 block of North Eighth Street.
Officers were dispatched around 3 p.m. to a reported shooting, where Lamont Sargent, 39, was in critical condition after a gunshot wound. He was transported to the University Hospital and died Sunday night, Columbia Police Department spokeswoman Latisha Stroer said.
Police arrested suspect Larell Banks, 18, of Fulton, Mo., early Monday morning. He was taken into custody at the Boone County Jail on charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection to the homicide, according to a news release.
The shooting is the second to occur since CPD stepped up its proactive patrols in response to recent Columbia shootings. The earlier incident occurred Friday morning at the intersection of Nifong Boulevard and Hermitage Road, when shots were fired from the sunroof of a vehicle. Prior to that, there had been 11 other shootings in Columbia in February.
Stroer said she was not aware of whether Sunday’s shooting had any connections to other shootings that have taken place in Columbia.
Banks is also facing charges in an unrelated incident in which he allegedly shot at a victim while driving his car last April. A jury trial is set for March 14 in that case.
