1. Freshman runs from Greektown toward Laws Hall to escape police
A freshman was apprehended by the MU Police Department in two separate incidents Monday morning.
MUPD Capt. Brian Weimer said Residential Life notified MUPD early Monday of a disturbance in Laws residence hall, 1005 Maryland Ave.
Weimer said officers arrived just before 1 a.m. and found freshmen Maxwell G. Garlik and Ryan T. Knudsen.
“The two were in an argument,” Weimer said. “They were visibly intoxicated.”
Garlick, 19, and Knudsen, 18, were both issued signature summons for private peace disturbance and possession of intoxicants by a minor.
Less than an hour later, Knudsen was apprehended again by MUPD officers.
“Officers observed a man running from Greektown toward Laws,” Weimer said. “He had been given a 12-hour trespass warning at 1 a.m. that day. He decided to go back into Laws Hall, and officers witnessed him go into the building. He resisted arrest by running.”
According to MUPD records, Knudsen was arrested again at 1:37 a.m. on suspicion of first-degree trespassing and resisting arrest.
2. Two arrested on cocaine charges
Columbia Police Department officers arrested two people Wednesday at America’s Best Value Inn at 1718 N. Providence Road after receiving a call about drugs in the building.
At 6:49 p.m., the officers contacted Dustin Prince, 27, and Patricia Pruett, 24, who gave them permission to search their room. According to a police report, the room smelled of marijuana, and the officers found a plastic bag with cocaine residue in it, a baggie of cocaine near the bed and when they searched Prince, they found a baggie of marijuana on his person. They also found cocaine in Prince’s car, and he admitted to having smoked when in the presence of his five-year-old son.
Prince was arrested on charges of second-degree endangerment of the welfare of a child, possession of 35 grams or less of marijuana, second-degree trafficking and use or possession of drug paraphernalia. Pruett was charged with second-degree endangerment of the welfare of a child, second-degree trafficking and use or possession of drug paraphernalia.
3. Flasher arrested at gym
Officers arrested a man Tuesday after receiving a call that he was inappropriately exposing himself to a female patron of Wilson’s Total Fitness at 111 Orr St. The man, Thomas Higgs, 49, quickly left the premises but returned to start masturbating in plain view of the female victim.
According to CPD spokeswoman Latisha Stroer, Higgs left after the victim threatened to call the police but reappeared a short time later and resumed masturbating in front of the window. He was arrested shortly after at about 10:45 p.m., and when police searched him, they found digital scales and two small baggies of marijuana that he had tried to hide. Higgs was arrested on charges of second-degree sexual misconduct, possession of drug paraphernalia and distribution of controlled substances.
4. Bartenders at 10 Below Bar arrested for serving underage
CPD officers performing an open business check at the 10 Below Bar at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday at 1915 Cherry St. arrested two staff members for serving underage patrons. According to a police report, the officers saw bartender Laura Swank, an MU senior, place a drink in front of 20-year-old Steven Steger, a sophomore. They also saw server Michelle Samborski, also a senior, provide an alcoholic beverage to 20-year-old junior Kaitlyn Rutledge. Samborski and Swank were charged with selling alcohol to drunkards and minors, and Steger and Rutledge were arrested on charges of purchase or possession by minors.
5. Police arrest two on drug charges
CPD officers were patrolling near Stephens Lake Park at 2001 E. Broadway at 2:00 a.m. Thursday when they noticed a purple van in a parking lot with two people inside. The officers saw a woman hastily putting items into her purse while the man just sat in the driver’s seat. The driver, Bradford Blum, 53, and Julie Lamberson, 43, had a marijuana pipe in their possession, according to a CPD arrest report. They were both arrested on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia.
