I was conflicted on whether or not I should send in this letter since I work for The Maneater and thought it might be inappropriate for me to write this letter, but after some thought, I felt that it was necessary for me to voice my opinion on this.
I am writing regarding the MOVE column “Grindr loving, had me aghast” published on Mar. 2. I realize that the Maneater has already received a lot of letters regarding the subject since it is so offensive. I won’t go into the reasons because I’m sure you have already seen them enumerated.
I’m very frustrated that Emma Woodhouse, which is not her real name, will remain anonymous. Most people also don’t realize that Emma Woodhouse is a pen name and nothing more, except for a Jane Austen character. I feel that is entirely unethical to have something published that is that offensive and not even attach a name to it. I think it is highly irresponsible and will be seen as a way to shirk responsibility for the offensive article.
The other frustrating thing is that there appears to be no consequences for Ms. Woodhouse’s actions. Yes, I saw Brandon Foster’s explanation for how events occurred, but from what I gathered in the explanation is that Woodhouse was only talked to, and that’s it. She’s clearly still employed, which in itself seems strange. At any other respected news outlet, someone who has written something that offensive would normally be fired.
It seems that the only consequences for her actions is that her editor talked to her. She won’t even face someone telling her what she did was wrong because no one knows who she is.
I am frustrated that it seems that Emma Woodhouse will have gotten away with writing one of the most offensive columns I have read with a slap on the wrist. If you’re going to publish something that pushes the envelope and might upset people, at least have the courage to put your actual name.
