The Residence Halls Association is offering five $1,000 scholarships to students who plan to live in a residence hall next year.

“Qualities we look for are leadership, dedication, involvement and GPA,” the scholarship application states.

The GPA minimum requirement is 2.00, and the scholarship committee encourages students who have been involved in their residence halls and positively influenced other residents to apply.

Applicants must complete a short questionnaire and a 500-word essay about his or her involvement in the residence halls and need for financial aid.

“This scholarship has been offered for a long, long time,” RHA President Chris Rucker said.

When residence hall representatives do not attend RHA meetings, the hall government is fined approximately $12. This money cannot be used for administrative purposes, so RHA representatives chose to give that money back to the residents in the form of a scholarship. A portion of the scholarship money also came from RHA’s spring semester budget.

There were about 75 applicants last year, Rucker said.

The selection committee is made up of RHA executive board members who are not eligible to receive the scholarship.

“(The executive board) is hoping to meet this weekend,” Rucker said. “In a perfect world, we will notify the winners on Monday.”

Applications are due at 5 p.m. Friday in the RHA office in Center Hall.
