Six weeks of preparation for a weeklong series of performances culminated at 7 p.m. Friday in Jesse Auditorium.
Five Greek Week pairings were invited to perform their skits a second time in the Fling finals. The top in-between acts and the Golden Girls also performed.
Fling winners will be announced during Greek Week’s final announcements at 8 p.m. Monday on the steps of Jesse Hall.
Alpha Chi Omega President Jae Stephens said Fling is one of her favorite parts of Greek Life.
“The atmosphere is so awesome, everyone’s so excited and proud to be with the frat they’re with,” Stephens said. “People can be excited for other houses, too. It’s not all about your own house, but all the pairings.”
Friday’s skits featured endings to cliffhangers that ended skits in the preliminary round.
“I felt all the skits did a great job making a creative ending,” FarmHouse President Drew Mreen said.
Kappa Kappa Gamma, Phi Kappa Theta and Beta Sigma Psi began the night with “Muppets in Mexico,” featuring a variety of characters from the series. After Kermit and Miss Piggy get into an argument, Miss Piggy goes to Mexico, where she meets an aristocrat who unsuccessfully tries to seduce her. Kermit goes to Mexico to save Miss Piggy and brings Gonzo and Fozzie Bear with him. Kermit fights the aristocrat for Miss Piggy. He has the chance to kill the aristocrat, but he doesn’t, letting him run away. Kermit ends the skit by proposing to Miss Piggy.
Skit director Noah Leiter said his favorite part was being able to incorporate Statler and Waldorf.
“We were able to incorporate them into the skit and make fun of how bad our skit and dance is,” he said. “We don’t really think it’s terrible, but the audience gets a kick out of it.”
Delta Delta Delta, Delta Tau Delta and Sigma Nu’s “Beauty and the Beast Part Two: A Jamaican Vacation” takes place 10 years after Belle marries the prince when the couple embarks on a vacation to Jamaica to rekindle their relationship. Because Belle is rude to the housekeeper, who happens to be the beggar in disguise, Belle becomes the “beast” and the Jamaican hotel workers become large household objects. The beggar says the couple has until the last coconut falls from the palm tree to remedy their relationship. Despite obstacles such as Gastonia taking the prince to her “love shack,” the two make up and have a happy ending.
Next, Chi Omega, Lambda Chi Alpha and FarmHouse performed. Their skit, “Mario Party: British Reunion,” incorporated Mario and Princess Peach.
“(We thought) it’d be funny if we put an Italian-based story in England,” Mreen said.
In “Mario Party: British Reunion,” Bowser sends a letter to Mario and Princess Peach’s home inviting them to dinner at Sir Bow’s house. Dressed in disguise, Bowser entertains the couple as well as Luigi, Yoshi, Donkey Kong and Toad, drugs them with poisoned mushrooms and kidnaps Princess Peach. Mario goes to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser’s dungeon, but discovers she has disappeared. He finds her in the arms of Luigi, whom she truly loves. Mario accepts the relationship, proclaiming his love for merely rescuing Princess Peach.
Gamma Phi Beta, Beta Theta Pi and Sigma Tau Gamma’s “Scooby-Doo Does D.C.” begins with the breakup of Fred and Daphne and subsequently the Mystery Inc. gang. A month later, each Mystery Inc. member receives a letter asking them to travel to Washington, D.C., to determine who stole the Declaration of Independence. After the members assemble, they find out the letters were part of Scooby-Doo’s ploy to reunite the gang, which is successful.
The final pairing, Alpha Chi Omega, Delta Sigma Phi and Tau Kappa Epsilon, suggested Shrek and Fiona be put on the list of famous couples from which to choose, Stephens said.
“We thought it’d be fun to have a cartoon-type skit – it’d be easier to make costumes – and we thought it’d be fun to use accents in the voices for the characters,” Stephens said.
“Farquaad’s Revenge: A Battle Far, Far Away” follows Shrek, Fiona and the rest of the fairytale creatures as they move to Morocco. They learn Farquaad has escaped the dragon, captured the Three Little Pigs and tortured them until they revealed Shrek and Fiona’s location. The Three Little Pigs warn Shrek of Farquaad’s arrival, and Shrek and the rest of the characters stay to fight him. After Shrek defeats Farquaad, the characters all find love for a happy ending.
Mreen said he thought all of Friday’s skits went well.
“I thought all the skits did a great job,” he said. “Everything was well-rehearsed.”
