A collision between a vehicle and a motorized wheelchair Monday afternoon on College Avenue left the victim in potentially life-threatening condition.
The Columbia Police Department and Columbia Fire Department responded to the collision just after 5 p.m., according to the Columbia Fire Department. The accident involved a dark-colored sedan, which sustained damage to the front bumper. After the accident, the car was stopped on College Avenue just north of Walnut Street, and the wheelchair was in the street at least 20 feet away.
A police officer at the scene said the person in the wheelchair was taken to the hospital, but the driver was uninjured. CPD officers were on College Avenue north of Walnut Street diverting northbound traffic to Windsor Street.
Emergency services conducted a rapid transport of the patient to the hospital for potentially life-threatening injuries.
An officer at the scene was unable to comment on what led to the collision.
