A Columbia man was arrested on multiple charges Friday after pulling a weapon on Walmart employees and later burglarizing a nearby home.
According to a Columbia Police Department news release, employees escorted Brian D. Murphy, 48, out of Walmart on Friday on suspicion of stealing merchandise the previous day. While being escorted, Murphy brandished what looked like a handgun and pointed it at Walmart employees.
Murphy fled on a bicycle, and CPD officers called to the scene were unable to locate him.
About three hours later, a witness called officers to 2808 Wild Plum Court about a man stealing goods from a homeowner’s garage. The suspect stole two chainsaws, a drill, a leaf blower and a tackle box, according to the news release.
Officers called to the home observed the suspect had what looked like a handgun tucked into his waistband and he fit Murphy’s description. After spreading throughout the nearby area, officers found and arrested Murphy near the 2100 block of Bluff Point.
Victims from Walmart and the garage burglary properly identified Murphy from each respective crime scene. Officers found what appeared to be handgun was actually a pellet pistol, which he had stolen from Walmart earlier Friday.
The motive behind Murphy’s crime spree is unclear, CPD spokeswoman Latisha Stroer said.
“It would have to be something you would have to talk to him about,” Stroer said.
Officers arrested Murphy on eight charges, including third-degree assault, burglary and resisting arrest. A $75,000 bond was assessed for Murphy’s charges, and he has also been banned from Walmart, according to court records.
Murphy is being held at Boone County Jail, and a preliminary hearing is set for 2 p.m. May 15 at the Boone County Courthouse.
