The MSA/GPC Department of Student Activities is bringing artist Ben Kweller to MU for the annual Fall Welcome Concert.
Kweller has been linked to various genres such as folk, rock, indie and punk. Many contributing factors came into play when the MSA/GPC College Music Committee was choosing an artist.
“Choosing an artist is a very lengthy and difficult process, but with this particular concert there are many moving pieces when it comes to making a decision,” College Music Committee junior chairman Chris Chandler said. “We sat down as a committee and discussed who would do the best free show for the student body.”
Factors other than the performers are pivotal when planning this event, CMC chairwoman Kellie Donahoe said.
“One thing we do is look at last year’s event and see how we can better from the previous year’s concert,” she said. “One large issue that we faced last year was finding a rain site to accommodate an artist as large as Jason Derulo.”
This year’s concert is set to take place on Carnahan Quadrangle.
“Ben Kweller is known for putting on great outdoor shows, so our decision was a lot easier because of his reputation with outdoor shows and the type of genre that accompanies it,” Donahoe said.
Sophomore Stuart Abrams said he was not interested in the artist chosen.
“I don’t plan on attending the concert,” Abrams said. “I’ve heard of Ben Kweller but I’m not interested in his music.”
CMC said when deciding on Kweller, it was aware he would not appeal to every student.
“Mizzou has a huge student body, and if we bring the same type of genre to every concert every year, we are bound to isolate some students from coming to our shows,” Chandler said. “We do not want that to happen — we want all students to enjoy their Mizzou experience.”
Chandler said the CMC has a few reasons for putting on this annual concert, which encompasses all levels of students.
“The Fall Welcome Concert is a free show with a purpose to welcome students back to campus,” Chandler said. “We want returning students to come out and have a good time their first week back to campus. For freshmen, Fall Welcome is their first college experience, and we want to welcome them with open arms and bring a talented artist that will put on a great free show for them.”
