A female student dialed 911 at about 11:35 p.m. Sunday claiming she was assaulted near the intersection of College Avenue and Rollins Street, according to an MU Police Department news release.
The victim said a black male made a derogatory comment and then struck her with his fist to the left side of her cheek. There are no reported witnesses, but campus officers are doing what they can to put together the pieces.
“We’ll reinterview the reportee, we’ll look for any type of physical evidence, we’ll look for any video in the area that may be able to assist,” MUPD Capt. Brian Weimer said. “I pray that after (this article) goes out, somebody will contact us with any additional information.”
All that can be said about the suspect now is that it was a black male, between ages 17 and 22, who was wearing dark pants and a dark top, according to the news release. There were reportedly two other men with him, described as a similar age and wearing similar clothes. The suspect was heading eastbound on College Avenue when he hit the victim, then continued east after striking her.
As of Sunday night, the woman had no serious injuries. She was left with a red mark across the face and didn’t require any hospitalization. MUPD can’t release what the suspect said to the victim at this time, and evidence gathered by the department hasn’t revealed any clear motive, Weimer said.
“We don’t guess on things like this,” Weimer said. “As of this time, nothing can be identified as to why it occurred.”
Although MUPD feels the MU campus is very safe, on-campus assault is not an entirely new case for campus police, Weimer said.
“We are aware that (crimes like this) may happen,” Weimer said. “That’s why we work very actively to keep the community informed of crimes that do happen so that they can make good choices when it comes to their safety.”
For the time being, MUPD is continuing to work on other cases while investigating the assault further. As stated in the official news release, anyone with information can contact MUPD Detective Sam Easley at 573-884-3721 or Crime Stoppers at 573-875-8477.
