Due to the construction on Mark Twain Hall this year, Mark Twain Market was forced to shut down temporarily. In its place, Campus Dining Services has opened up Jack Hammer’s, a new dining option for students.
MU’s newest dining option features soups, sandwiches and many pre-packaged items. Jack Hammer’s is a temporary sandwich shop constructed with the residents of McDavid Hall specifically in mind.
“We opened Jack Hammer’s at McDavid Hall to focus on the students who reside there, so they have a dining option that’s closer to their hall,” CDS spokesman Michael Wuest said.
Because of the distance of McDavid Hall from most dining halls on campus, Jack Hammer’s is a close, convenient option for McDavid residents.
“There are a wide variety of ingredients at Jack Hammer’s and all are prepared fresh daily,” Wuest said.
Jack Hammer’s offers not only sandwiches but four different types of wraps as well. The establishment’s made-to-order sandwiches and salads also accommodate vegan and vegetarian students, thanks to their diverse range of ingredients and protein options, like hummus.
The restaurant has already gained positive reviews from some of its diners.
“I love the value meal plan,” freshman Sonali Sharma said. “It comes with a ton of food and it’s pretty cheap, too.”
The value meal includes a sandwich or salad, a side, a dessert and a beverage for one meal point. The side options at Jack Hammer’s include chips, fruit or yogurt, and the daily dessert gives diners a choice between cookies or an oatmeal cream pie. There are more than 30 different pre-packaged snacks, including bags of potato chips and Oreos. Jack Hammer’s is a part of the MU student meal plan but offers students the choice to use student charge as well.
“I don’t live anywhere near McDavid, so it was kind of a far walk for me, but definitely worth it,” sophomore Katherine Woodruff.
Jack Hammer’s will only be open until the renovations on Mark Twain are completed in Fall 2013. The dining hall has been erected in previous years to accommodate the ongoing residence hall construction, called the Residential Life Master Plan.
The project, which began in 2001, is a five-phase project intended to renovate or remodel every residence hall on campus. When a residence hall is under construction and its dining hall is closed, as well, Jack Hammer’s is constructed for the benefit and convenience of the affected students. The fifth phase of the plan is slated to be finished by Fall 2018.
Jack Hammer’s is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
