The No. 13 Missouri women’s soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Thursday night, dropping a debilitating overtime match 1-0 to the Ohio State Buckeyes (4-2) in Columbus, Ohio.
After 90 minutes of play, during which neither squad was able to score, the first overtime period lasted just 24 seconds before Buckeye senior forward Tiffany Cameron slipped one past Tiger redshirt sophomore goalkeeper McKenzie Sauerwein.
The loss came in Missouri’s final non-conference game and dropped the Tigers to 5-1, spoiling their best start since the 2006 season.
Cameron’s right-side finish from 6 yards out came off a pinpoint cross from freshman forward Marisa Wolf, who made a long run down the field after the Buckeyes were awarded possession to start the extra period. The shot was the only one of 15 Buckeye chances to find the back of the net. Sauerwein recorded six saves for Missouri.
The Tigers also attempted 15 shots. All four on goal were thwarted by Buckeye keeper Rachel Middleman.
With regulation winding down, senior midfielder Jessica Greer had a chance for Missouri on a cross by senior midfielder Haley Krentz from the near end line. Stationed in front of the net, Greer got her head on the ball, but her shot sailed just wide, sending the game into overtime.
Senior forward Taiwo Adeshigbin and junior midfielder Dominique Richardson led the Tiger offense with five and four shots, respectively. Missouri controlled possession for most of the final 20 minutes of regulation but could not capitalize.
Twenty-four total fouls were called during the contest, 14 on Missouri and 10 on Ohio State. The Tigers also led in corner kicks, 8-7.
Missouri will begin its Southeastern Conference slate next Friday on the road against Auburn.
