The No. 21 Missouri women’s soccer team (7-1, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) tore into SEC play this weekend, shutting out both Auburn and South Carolina.
On Sunday, Missouri defeated South Carolina 1-0 in the final minutes of the game. With 2:01 left, junior midfielder Abi Raymer slid a pass to junior midfielder Dominique Richardson, who slammed a one-timer to the back of the net.
The goal was Richardson’s third on the season and her second game-winning goal, which ties her for fourth in the SEC for the most game-winning goals.
Missouri continued to pound the ball on offense, outshooting South Carolina 17-8 in the contest.
McKenzie Sauerwein made three saves in the shutout, her fourth shutout this season. Sauerwein’s 0.62 goals against average ranks fifth in the SEC.
“South Carolina really put us through a tough test today — they were extremely hard to break down,” coach Bryan Blitz said in a news release.
On Friday, the Tigers headed to Auburn, Ala., for their inaugural SEC challenge, swiftly beating the other Tigers 2-0.
In the 29th minute of the second half, Missouri tallied when sophomore Kaysie Clark ripped a shot from the left side of the box. The goal was Clark’s second of the year.
Senior midfielder Haley Krentz also scored her second goal of the season to put the Tigers ahead 2-0. Krentz’s two goals and five assists gave her nine points on the year, tied for first on the team with senior forward Taiwo Adeshigbin, who has four goals and an assist.
The Tigers currently sit atop the SEC Eastern Division with Kentucky, tied at two wins apiece after one weekend of conference play. Texas A&M, the other newcomer to the league, is outpacing the SEC Western Division with an 8-1 record and two wins as well within the league.
On Friday at home, Missouri is set to play Ole Miss, which holds second place in the West. The Tigers will then play host to Vanderbilt on Sunday. The Commodores tied with Georgia and Tennessee over the weekend.
