The audience applauded as the MU Studio Jazz Band walked onstage in black suits and dresses. Director Arthur White snapped his fingers, and Bob Mintzer’s “Life of the Party” filled the Missouri Theatre.
The theater hosted the MU Concert Jazz Band and Studio Jazz Band on Sept. 20 for their CD release concert for the album “Hidden Agenda.” All of the songs on the CD were arranged by director Arthur White and feature Grammy-nominated trombonist Robin Eubanks.
In the first half of the show, the set list included “I’m in the Mood for Swing,” “Blue Bossa” and “Up for Air.” Later, they played “All of Me” by Simons and Marks, but this tune was a bit different than the others. It had vocals. As freshman Ben Colagiovanni sang, his left hand was in his pocket while his right hand snapped to the beat of the music.
“Ultimately, your success in the concert depends on how much work you put in outside of class,” Colagiovanni said. “I try to put in two hours a day, roughly.”
The bands rehearsed three times a week for the past month to prepare for this concert. Many of the performers had people who came to the concert to support them.
“I came because my friend Paulo is playing in the concert tonight — he’s a classical guitarist,” freshman Alec Feldges said. “I’m a classical guitarist also. We play together. And I love jazz.”
After intermission, the MU Concert Jazz Band returned to the stage. The band played “Big Dipper,” “Rockin’ in Rhythm,” “Hidden Agenda” and “Chameleon.”
During the second song of the set, “Latin Dance,” the band started to loosen up. The band members swayed their hips, exchanged smiles and bobbed their heads to the beat. Their instruments roared with Latin tinge.
“I just like the energy that the bands really can generate,” sophomore Callie Floyd said.
The second vocalist of the night, Lexie Signor, sang George Gershwin’s “Summertime.” Her foot tapped as she belted how “the livin’ is easy.” Later in the song, Sam Copeland played a guitar solo about which the director raved.
“Summertime” was followed by a Radiohead rendition, and the audience members’ feet weren’t the only ones tapping.
“My favorite is probably ‘Bodysnatchers,’ the Radiohead tune,” graduate student Lily Tan said. “It is very fun to play.”
