Columbia police surrounded a duplex Friday in north Columbia and arrested Larry Belk, a wanted suspect in an Alton, Ill., murder.
At 8:40 a.m., Columbia police were dispatched to 1406 Risen Star Court after an anonymous tip reported wanted murder suspect Beck was at the residence, according to a Columbia Police Department news release. The caller said both Beck and Porcha Marshall, 21, had been dropped off. After setting up surveillance, authorities confirmed his identity.
Columbia’s SWAT team was dispatched to the scene at 11:30 a.m. CPD notified the administration of Derby Ridge Elementary due to its close proximity to the scene. Derby Ridge Elementary facilitates 569 students and 79 staff members.
The administration made the decision to place the school on a modified lockdown. Classes continued while exterior doors were locked.
The school went on lockdown for approximately 20 minutes, Columbia Public Schools spokeswoman Michelle Baumstark said.
The SWAT team arrived on the scene at 12:30 p.m., and 11 team members approached the residence.
“We gathered a team for a high-risk arrest,” CPD Operations Support Commander Brian Richenberger said. “We made a plan and executed it. We were prepared for the worst, but essentially it was an arrest warrant to serve.”
After detaining an unidentified female in a vehicle outside the residence, SWAT used a bullhorn to contact Belk and Marshall inside the residence. After 8 minutes, Belk exited the duplex without incident. Marshall followed and was placed into custody on an active city warrant.
“Once we arrived and executed the plan, there was no resistance from the suspect,” Richenberger said.
Belk, 20, had an outstanding felony warrant for first-degree murder.
The victim, Tyler Hoppe, was shot and killed on Dec. 7, 2011, in the 1200 block of Hampton Street, according to a statement released Friday by the Alton Police Department.
“(Three) suspects were charged, but there was still one suspect who was evading capture,” the release stated. “He was from St. Louis and had little connection to the Alton area. After he was charged, he has been hiding out at several different locations in the St. Louis area and avoiding arrest.”
Belk carries a $1 million bond and is currently being held in the Boone County Jail, pending extradition to Illinois. The two other suspects — Nigel Generally, 20, and Hosie Burgess, 22 — have been in custody in Alton.
