The No. 16 Missouri women’s soccer team (12-2, 7-1 Southeastern Conference) knocked off both Kentucky and Mississippi State in its home stand this weekend.
On Sunday, the Tigers dismantled the Bulldogs 2-0 for their fifth Sunday shutout in six games played.
Sophomore midfielder Abi Raymer booted the first goal of the game in the 33rd minute. Junior midfielder Dominique Richardson slid a pass to Raymer, who toed her sixth goal of the season from the middle of the box.
Raymer leads the team in points this season with 14.
Senior forward Taiwo Adeshigbin added another tally to the board in the 65th minute on an 18-yard strike from the right side of the box.
“I thought they did a good job to try to physically punish them and let us be the aggressor as opposed to the other team,” coach Bryan Blitz said after the game.
The goal was Adeshigbin’s sixth as well this season. The Tigers have three players with six goals this season: Raymer, Adeshigbin and junior forward Alyssa Diggs.
On Friday, Missouri beat Kentucky 2-1 in overtime.
Diggs scored both goals in the game, including the overtime golden goal to secure the victory.
Missouri led for 83 minutes before surrendering a goal in the final ticks of the second half to tie it up 1-1.
But Diggs turned the game around for the Tigers a few minutes into the first overtime.
“Kentucky almost outplayed us in the second half,” coach Bryan Blitz said. “We bent a little bit and went to overtime. A lot of it had to do with Kentucky and their fight. We need to follow through. But in overtime, we had the opportunity and put it away, and we’re thankful for it. But you have to give a lot of credit to Kentucky.”
Starting Friday, Missouri enters its final two weeks of regular season play. The Tigers will take on No. 17 Florida at 6 p.m. and Alabama at noon Sunday.
Florida and Missouri both sit on top of the SEC East standings with 7-1 conference records.
Missouri played then-No. 8 Florida last season and lost 2-0 at home. That loss stopped the Tigers’ seven-game win streak.
