A man was arrested early Thursday after leading a Columbia police officer on a chase through town and crashing into the side of a nightclub.
Kyle Hargrett, 25, was driving north on Tenth Street near Rogers Street at 3:22 a.m. when an officer saw him fail to stop at a stop sign, according to a Columbia Police Department news release. The officer tried to pull Hargrett over on Eighth Street, but Hargrett sped up and evaded the officer in his white Buick.
The officer turned off his lights, continued to travel on Eighth Street and then noticed Hargrett’s car had collided with the south brick wall of the Thirsty Turtle, a nightclub located at 916 E. Business Loop 70. The collision left a crack in the brick wall of the building.
Witnesses were able to point the officer toward Hargrett, who was running from the scene. The officer ran after him and arrested him behind Charles Barber Shop, according to the news release. Hargrett was alone and smelled strongly of intoxicants.
He was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, failure to observe traffic control devices, operating a vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner, leaving the scene of an accident, resisting arrest and operating a vehicle without a valid license. Hargrett’s bond totaled $10,000.
