The Boone County Sheriff’s Department arrested a barricaded man, Antonio Vaughn, holding hostages on Saturday at a Columbia residence.
At 4:23 a.m., sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a residence in the 5500 block of Pinehurst Lane in the Lake of the Woods area after receiving a call from Vaughn, who reported he had sustained a gunshot wound, according to a Boone County Sheriff’s Department news release. A nearby deputy reported to the scene immediately, and additional deputies arrived within 12 minutes of the first emergency call.
Further calls were received from Vaughn’s girlfriend, indicating Vaughn had not received a gunshot wound, had weapons in his possession and might have been under the influence of an unknown substance, according to the release. The sheriff’s department later suspected Vaughn was under the influence of narcotics.
When police arrived at the residence, they were met by the mother of Vaughn’s girlfriend and led inside.
“Mr. Vaughn was holding two people inside an upstairs bedroom,” Boone County Sheriff’s Department Detective Tom O’Sullivan said.
Vaughn reportedly had his girlfriend and her 5-year-old daughter trapped inside, while the girlfriend’s 16-year-old daughter and mother were unrestrained in the residence.
When the police attempted to gain cooperation with him, O’Sullivan said the Vaughn was combative and non-compliant. After unsuccessfully attempting to gain Vaughn’s cooperation, the police used force to enter the bedroom.
The hostages were frightened by what was going on, as Vaughn had two knives in his possession while in the bedroom, O’Sullivan said. As the police were entering the room, Vaughn was brandishing a knife and barely missed contacting an officer when attempting to stab him. In order to subdue Vaughn, the deputies used a Taser.
Vaughn was arrested and is being held in Boone County Jail on $69,500 bond for felonious restraint, armed criminal action, endangering the welfare of a child in the first and second degree, unlawful use of a weapon, second-degree assault of a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, possession of less than 35 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
No one was injured in the incident, according to the news release. Vaughn has been in the Boone County Jail at least 21 times in the past 15 years, O’Sullivan said.
