The sixth and final season of the CW’s “Gossip Girl” premiered Monday, Oct. 8 with a very big announcement by none other than Gossip Girl herself. She openly admits she foresees the end of her lengthy blogging career by saying, “I’ve got a feeling that this fall could be my last season. I’ve been at this a long time, but age breeds wisdom and this I know, the best is yet to come.” CW has already confirmed that Gossip Girl will be revealed this season, a move that is sure to leave the Upper East Side in utter chaos.
The premiere begins with Chuck and Blair, more commonly known as “Chair,” and their struggle to figure out their relationship while simultaneously trying leaving Chuck’s business unharmed by their irrational love. Meanwhile, Serena has gone missing in an all-too-familiar plot twist. Billions of dollars later, Nate, Chuck, Dan, Blair and the infamous Georgina Sparks uncover Serena’s previously undisclosed location and find that Serena – under the alias Sabrina – has started a new life and acquired a new love interest.
Seeing the entire cast on screen, while entertaining, was also awkward, as their characters all fought for screen time. There are only so many puns and one-liners that can be said at one time before dialogue among the five of them starts sounding jumbled. So as bittersweet as it is, maybe it is time for this long-running series to sign off while it still has its dignity and a loyal fan base.
