A man was arrested Wednesday in Fulton after being linked to three separate assaults in the Columbia area on the same day.
Fulton police stopped the suspect vehicle at 4 p.m. Wednesday and took Justin Campbell, 29, into custody without incident, according to a Columbia Police Department news release. Police found a handgun on the floorboard of the car; the handgun was three rounds short of full capacity.
A woman was driving the suspect vehicle. It is not clear how the driver is associated with the incidents, other than driving Campbell around Columbia and to Fulton.
Beau Leach, 31, said Campbell shot him three times in the torso, according to a Columbia Police Department news release. Leach was taken to the University Hospital emergency room by personal vehicle.
Columbia Police Department spokeswoman Latisha Stroer said detectives have spoken with the woman who drove Leach to the hospital, but it is not clear why she left without making contact with hospital employees or law enforcement authorities.
Leach was taken directly into surgery. After the procedure, Leach told detectives that Campbell came to his residence at Oak Cliff Place and fired his gun after becoming enraged with him, the release stated. Detectives received information that Campbell might have gone to Fulton, so they contacted the Fulton Police Department for assistance in locating Campbell.
“We believe it was methamphetamine-related as well as him trying to rob people for money,” Stroer said.
At about 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, Campbell was involved in another incident. The investigation conducted by the Columbia Police Department revealed Campbell came to a 54-year-old man’s residence and asked him for money. Campbell struck the man at least twice in the head with the butt of his gun after the victim said he did not have any money, according to a police department news release.
About an hour after the shooting, deputies from the Boone County Sheriff’s Department responded to a burglary on Old Ridge Road. Two maids reported a man knocked on the door and asked for water for his radiator.
When the maid returned with the water, the man forced his way into the residence, armed with a pistol. He tied up both women with ligatures and fled with a small amount of cash, a laptop computer and an iPad. Sheriff’s department Detective Tom O’Sullivan said the robbery occurred at approximately 12:45 p.m.
Detectives searched the car and recovered several pieces of evidence linking Campbell to crimes within the city and county, and also in Fulton.
“We have a significant amount of evidence linking him to that incident on Old Ridge Road,” O’Sullivan said. “I can’t really go into specifics about the evidence, but we are very confident that we have the right person.”
Campbell was initially taken into custody in Fulton and then returned to Boone County. He was arrested in Boone County Jail for first-degree assault, armed criminal action, second-degree assault and unlawful use of weapon. His bond is currently set at $4,500.
In the past, Campbell was arrested for property damage, possession of drugs, domestic violence, robbery, burglary and forgery, O’Sullivan said.
