The No. 24 Missouri women’s soccer team continued its late-season plunge
Thursday night, falling 2-1 in overtime to No. 13 Texas A&M in College Station,
Texas. The loss was the third straight for the Tigers (13-6, 8-5 Southeastern
Conference), and the fifth in their last eight games.
Texas A&M (16-3-1, 10-2-1 SEC) walked off seven minutes into the overtime
period when Chelsea Jones knocked in the game-winner off a pass from Shea
Groom.
With the win, the Aggies clinched the No. 2 seed in next week’s SEC Tournament
in Orange Beach, Ala. Missouri is seeded fifth.
After a scoreless first half, Texas A&M’s Annie Kunz blasted a shot from the right
side past Missouri redshirt sophomore goalkeeper McKenzie Sauerwein in the
69th minute to put the Aggies up 1-0.
Missouri sophomore forward Kaysie Clark knotted the score at 1-1 in the 82nd
minute from inside the box off a cross from senior midfielder Haley Krentz. The
goal was Clark’s fourth of the season, and the assist was Krentz’s team-leading
ninth.
Texas A&M was aided by the stellar play of goalkeeper Jordan Day, who kept
Missouri scoreless for most of the game with an array of diving stops.
In the 27th minute, Day sprawled out to block a sizzler from the near post off the
foot of Tiger junior forward Alyssa Diggs, who had dribbled behind the defense.
In the 70th minute Day left her feet once again, this time to stop a Krentz shot
that ricocheted off an Aggie defender. Day finished with six saves.
Sauerwein recorded five saves.
Missouri outshot Texas A&M 16-14 and earned five corner kicks to the Aggies’
three.
The Tigers open SEC tournament competition Wednesday with a quarterfinal
matchup against the Kentucky Wildcats.
