Last evening, the Residence Halls Association hosted a Pinterest Craft Night inside the Bengal Lair at Memorial Student Union.
This is the second time RHA has hosted the event, which debuted last year and allowed students to spend an evening making crafts either found on or inspired by Pinterest, the popular photo-sharing website which allows users to create and post images of crafts and other objects they find beautiful and inspiring.
“Pinterest Craft Night is something we did last year, and it was popular and successful so we decided to try hosting another one this year with some new and different crafts,” RHA Programming Board coordinator Kenton Gewecke said. “There are a lot of students on campus who like to craft, but there are not a lot of places on campus where students can do them for free, so we are putting on this event to give students a place to do some free crafts.”
Six crafts were available to complete at tables set up inside the Bengal Lair. They included making bracelets out of beads, bedazzling coffee cups and constructing flower decorations by adorning Styrofoam balls with artificial flowers.
“At my table, we are cutting out paper shapes and threading them together to make garlands which you can hang in your room,” RHA Programming Board member Cara Hartwig said. “I found this craft on Pinterest, and I thought it would be a good one for tonight because it’s fun and you can hang the garland in your room, but it is also easy and doesn’t require a lot of materials.”
Some participants chose to attend the event because they are Pinterest users with an established interest in crafting.
“I came because I really like Pinterest and making do-it-yourself things,” junior Lydia Emge said. “I am having a lot of fun so far because I really like the crafts they have here tonight.”
Students who did not have a lot of experience making crafts also attended the event.
“I am on Pinterest, and I like to look at the crafts on there,” freshman Sarah Moore said. “But I usually don’t have time to try to do them, so I was excited that they were putting on an event like this. I decided it would be fun to come and finally do some crafts.”
