An attempted traffic stop turned into a high-speed pursuit and eventually resulted in a cocaine arrest early Sunday morning.

At 1 a.m., the suspect’s speeding vehicle caught the attention of Boone County Sheriff’s Department deputy Nikki Antimi. She attempted to make a traffic stop, but the driver failed to yield to Antimi’s emergency lights and sirens. A pursuit ensued.

With the suspect traveling westbound near the 5000 block of Clark Lane, the chase ended when the car eventually stopped near Vandiver Drive and Parker Street.

Columbia Police Department officers assisted Antimi with the arrest.

The driver, 47-year-old Columbia resident Henry C. Wilson, was taken into custody and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute after deputies found him in possession of individually packaged crack cocaine, according to a news release.

“They determined that he had intent to distribute from the manner in which the controlled substance was packaged,” Sgt. Brian Leer said.

Wilson was also charged with driving while intoxicated, Leer said.

Other charges Wilson faces include failing to yield to an emergency vehicle, speeding and driving while suspended. This is Wilson’s second offense of driving while suspended, according to the release.

“What happens in Missouri is that someone proves that they’re an unsafe driver, such as they get so many citations in a certain amount of time,” Leer said. “They’ll suspend their driver’s license for a temporary time so they can’t drive, so that’s where the driving while suspended charge comes from.”

Wilson’s bond, not yet including the possession charge, is set to $1,290 for all charges, according to the release.
