The Legion of Black Collegians is starting off the semester with two events this month.
The LBC Freshman Action Team is hosting its annual speed dating Feb. 12, FAT chairwoman Marnae Chavers said.
The event will take place at 7 p.m. in the Walt Disney Room in Memorial Student Union and will feature speed dating, as well as games on the side depending on the crowd, Chavers said.
“It’s my first event of the semester,” Chavers said. “It’s the second FAT event not targeted at only freshman. It’s our chance to show off.”
The event is open to everybody and gives freshman a chance to get to know the upperclassmen, Chavers said.
The event was first hosted in 2011. LBC executive board members as well as FAT members plan on attending this year, Chavers said.
The event has no dress code, and Chavers said she encourages everyone to attend.
The second LBC event this month is elections, which start with nominations Feb. 27.
The legion is looking for new minority leaders to take on jobs of the current executive board, said Political Action Chairwoman Cynthia Spires.
The elections take place earlier this year than last year so new members can be exposed to more before the current members leave, Spires said.
Several current members graduate this year, including President Greer Relphorde and Vice President Cameron Grant.
One current member is thinking of running for president, Spires said, though she didn’t say whom. She said some senators are also thinking of applying.
Many members of the Freshman Action Team are considering positions, Spires said.
“That’s the beauty of it,” Spires said. “They get to see how we work. They have their own executive board. They’re kind of trained, I guess, to take on the overall government.”
Spires said fliers with important deadlines are being made to hand out on the day of nominations. She plans to publicize the event in hopes that more people fit for the positions will apply.
On March 6, there will be an informational meeting to go over the guidelines of the group, Greer said in the first LBC meeting of the year. The debate will be on April 3, and voting will be held on April 8.
