A deputy from the Boone County Sheriff’s Department engaged in a vehicle pursuit Saturday evening.

The pursuit ensued after the deputy observed suspicious activity from a parked vehicle near a closed business on the 5900 block of Wagon Trail Road, according to a news release from the sheriff’s department.

The deputy approached the suspicious vehicle in his patrol car, but the driver quickly pulled away. Following the suspect, the deputy tried to perform a traffic stop to halt the vehicle, but the individual failed to comply and continued driving.

As the pursuit continued, the suspect committed several traffic violations including running stop signs, passing a vehicle in a no-passing zone and speeding through traffic, according to the news release.

After turning into the Clearview Subdivision in north Columbia, the vehicle stopped on the 60 block of Hackberry Boulevard, where the driver fled the scene on foot. The passenger was not arrested for any criminal violations and was released after investigation.

The driver, 36-year-old Victor Houston, was later located running on Clearview Road. Deputies found out that the Columbia resident did not have a valid driver’s license. According to the Missouri Courts website, Houston has been arrested more than 10 times for various charges, including assault.

Houston was arrested on charges of careless and imprudent driving, driving without a valid operator’s license and resisting arrest, with a bond set at $9,145. Houston was processed in the Boone County Jail.

According to the sheriff’s department website, moving violations are the most common need for traffic stops, with 4,051 in 2011 alone. Driving without a license is ranked third among traffic stops.

Houston was released at 8:17 p.m. Saturday under Sgt. James Perkins’ authorization, according to the news release.
