It’s not often that I agree with The Maneater’s take on Missouri Students Association.

Except for a big chunk of their editorial in last Friday’s issue.

You guys are right, we aren’t really representative of the student body and this has a lot to do with the fact that we elect a majority of senators in house. Over 60 percent of senators were elected by members of the senate. This probably is why MSA seems so clubby.

A lot of our senators got in because they knew somebody or because they have very similar viewpoints. And that’s not fair.

I’m not saying we’ve elected senators who shouldn’t be in Senate. We’ve got a great group of new senators this year. But knowing someone or sharing the same viewpoint as a majority of senators should not be a prerequisite for election.

That’s why today I submitted legislation proposing to amend the MSA Constitution and Bylaws to allow you, the students, to elect all of your senators.

But we, the senate, cannot make this change on our own. Once passed by 2/3 of the senate, the decision will fall to you in the form of a referendum.

Once that time comes, I urge you to vote yes. This is your student government and I encourage you to take it back.
