A 23-year-old man was arrested after a vehicle pursuit at 9:42 p.m. Friday.
Daniel Peek, the driver of the vehicle, did not pull over for a traffic stop initiated by Boone County Sheriff’s Department’s Pro-Active Unit personnel.
Peek was driving a blue Dodge Dakota pickup truck down New Haven Road when police initiated the traffic stop because Peek was driving erratically at high speeds.
According to a Boone County Sheriff’s Department news release, the pursuit traveled east on New Haven Road, then north on Rolling Hills Road. In the area of Rolling Hills Road and Highway WW, a sheriff’s deputy successfully deployed a tire deflation device.
Spike strips are used during high speed pursuits to puncture a vehicle’s tires and stop them. Law enforcement agencies use the brand Stop Stick. According to the Stop Stick website, the spike strip is designed to deflate tires without blowouts, allowing for no debris to be left on the roadway.
Peek stopped the vehicle at Bower Lane, approximately half a mile from Rolling Hills Road, where he fled from the vehicle, leaving his passenger, 35-year-old Daria Littleton, in the car. Deputies found methamphetamine in the vehicle.
Peek engaged in a struggle with several deputies, according to the news release, and it took two officers to subdue him. Police took Peek into custody and arrested him on five counts, including resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, careless and imprudent driving, and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.
Littleton was released from the Boone County Jail on summons for charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of less than 35 grams of marijuana.
Detective Tom O’Sullivan said there is no information available on how much methamphetamine Peek had on him or what kind of drug paraphernalia the police found.
“Peek said he was an employee at Buckridge Flooring,” O’Sullivan said. “We have no information on Littleton’s employment status, but Peek and Littleton are both Columbia residents.”
