There are times when angst-filled songs are needed, and then there’s Kate Nash’s new album _Girl Talk_.
Let’s just get this out of the way: “Girl Talk” is not a good album. Nash’s angst can only go so far, and by the middle of the 15-song album, it became really overdone. For the most part, the album consists of an incongruous mash of misplaced guitar riffs, awkwardly yelled verses and some sloppily written lyrics.
Luckily, there are some bright spots to _Girl Talk_. Nash’s first album, _Made of Bricks_, was one of my favorite albums of 2007 – it was sweet and peppy while still being edgy. It’s only when Nash returns to her 2007 self in _Girl Talk_ that the album can be defined as truly enjoyable. “3AM” is by far the best song in the mix with a true return to what made Nash so popular in the first place: It’s edgy with a high tempo. The only other song that makes it into the spotlight is “OHMYGOD!,” which offers some catchy lyrics and a hummable tune.
The only good thing about the other 13 songs on _Girl Talk_ is that they makes the softer, more powerful songs sound better than anything else. Unfortunately, Nash’s album is bad – really bad.
