The Legion of Black Collegians started its election process last week by holding nominations for next year’s executive board.

The nominations were scheduled for Feb. 27, but the meeting was cancelled due to weather, LBC President Greer Relphorde said in an email to members.

Instead, members and current executive board members sent nominations via email on March 2. The executive board held a meeting March 3 to discuss the nominations, said Political Action Chairwoman Cynthia Spires.

Campaigning begins on March 20, Spires said, and ends the last day of voting on April 10. Nominees are allowed to use a number of tactics, such as distributing T-shirts, giving out ribbons, coming up with slogans and giving out information, Spires said.

The nominees are required to get 50 signatures from students on campus and cannot have the same signatures of another nominee, Spires said. She recommends getting ten extra signatures so that nominees do not have to get new signatures. These signatures, along with applications, are due on March 13. Nominees must also have a minimum GPA of 2.75 or are required to get a letter of recommendation.

Nominees will participate in a debate April 3 in the Gaines/Oldham Black Culture Center that covers LBC background, history and how the nominee can compliment the organization, Spires said during the meeting.

Voting takes place April 8-10, and nominees should be notified no longer than five days after the polls close, Spires said, though it will most likely be sooner than that.

The requirements of each position can be found in the LBC constitution on the [website](http://lbc.missouri.edu/about/constitution/). Spires said the time devoted to each office varies depending on the position.

Relphorde reiterated the point in her email.

“Please, keep in mind that if you do get elected to an executive board position, it is a yearlong commitment that will require weekly executive board meetings and biweekly Senate meetings,” Relphorde said. “All positions are paid and look great on a resume and will require your time and energy.”

The president and vice president positions have to be filled by current members of the executive board, Spires said.

Marnae Chavers is the nominee for president and George “Paannii” Annan is the nominee for vice president, both running with no opposition, though Spires said they are still required to platform and participate in the debates. Chavers, the current Freshman Action Team chairwoman, will appoint the next FAT leader for next year, a position that is not elected.

Annan said he plans to continue what the current president and vice president are doing this year, but that MU should be excited for what’s coming next as he plans to bring something new to LBC.

“You’ll have to wait and see in the debates,” Annan said.

Chavers said she has been with LBC for a while and is excited for the opportunity to be president. She and Annan are good friends and work well together, she said. She said she is excited, though she would rather not comment yet on what the team is planning for next year.
