A man and woman were arrested in connection with a disturbance that included gunshots on Quail Drive on Thursday.
A Columbia police officer were dispatched to 2600 Quail Drive in response to an argument between two men who witnesses identified as neighbors.
“(The neighbors) had been arguing off and on over the last two weeks, but we do not know why,” Columbia Police Department spokeswoman Latisha Stroer said.
Prior to the officer’s arrival, Joint Communications informed the department that two gunshots had been fired during the argument and that a suspect had ran from the scene toward Highway 63. No one was injured during the incident and no property was damaged.
James Johnson, 45, was seen crossing Highway 63 north of Home Depot while officers set up a perimeter and called a K9 in to track the suspect. After a short chase, Johnson was taken into custody.
Johnson was charged on charges of first-degree assault, unlawful possession of a firearm and armed criminal action. Johnson has a previous record of second-degree domestic assault from 2006.
Johnson’s girlfriend, 26-year-old Brittany J. Thurston of Columbia, gave officers consent to search their apartment for weapons. Police found three loaded weapons, including a 0.22 pistol that was in plain view on the kitchen floor.
According to witness reports, Thurston hid the pistol from which the shots were fired during the incident in a nearby building. Witnesses described seeing Thurston take a coat into that building. Investigations revealed the pistol was stolen in Colorado.
Thurston was taken into custody for tampering with physical evidence and has a previous record for tampering in 2012.
Johnson and Thurston were taken to the Boone County Jail, where they remain in custody.
CPD dispatch logs show this is the thirteenth disturbance incident to take place on Quail Drive this year.
