OK, I admit it. I have been remiss.
In my weeks of chatting about the latest spring trends and the ways to look adorable in your everyday life, I’ve failed to justly recognize a certain demographic of MOVE readers: the males. To be frank, my relationship with male trends is similar to my relationship with males themselves; I know they exist, they’re fun to look at, but I don’t really have much knowledge on the subject.
I would hate to leave all you sartorial fellas out there high and dry though, so I took to the Internet to educate myself a bit. After a little bit of looking, I realized I might know a little more about guy’s fashion than I thought I did. I mean, I have been observing it my entire life, and I do, in fact, have some opinions on the matter.
Right off the bat, if you’re a guy and have decided to just dip your toe into the style world, my No. 1 tip is this: Go simple. It takes a well-seasoned eye to piece together a well-crafted, layered number, and for the most part, simple always works. Sometimes all it takes is grabbing a pair of jeans (I would almost always suggest straight leg for guys), a slightly fitted, neutral-colored Henley and a pair of your favorite Vans to look polished and put together.
If you think you’re a little more advanced and are ready to branch out with your wardrobe, consider trying some new prints and fabrics this spring. On some of the cooler days this month, make an effort to work some corduroy into your ensemble. It adds an unexpected texture to a look and almost any guy could use some alternatives to the overdone plaid button-up look.
Side note: A friend once asked me if it was bad that he wore a plaid shirt every single time he went out on the weekends. Quick answer? YES. Come on guys, I know you have some variety in you.
If corduroy isn’t your style, try adding a chambray shirt or a military style jacket to your look. Both items are casual enough to ease into everyday wear but create a refined and classic look.
If you really can’t bear to veer off the plaid-track, consider picking up a gingham shirt. It has the same relaxed vibe but with an unexpected twist. Quick tip: they also look great with skinny ties. If there’s one thing I’ve learned about dude fashion: We all swoon for skinny ties.
To all the guys out there who are already well-versed in style and understand what the words “chambray” and “gingham” meant, I applaud you. The only suggestion I have to offer you is the possible addition of a new accessory. The previously under-the-radar Kiel James Patrick Brand is known for the all-American look they bring to accessories, from belts to bracelets to bowties. Recently, the brand collaborated with none other than Brooks Brothers to create a line of men’s anchor bracelets. Now it’s easier than ever to obtain one of their signature pieces, and just in time for that yacht trip you’re planning on taking this summer. Or just in time for your plans to lay out at Tiger Grotto all day, every day. Whichever.
No matter if you’re a beginner or a seasoned veteran in the world of men’s style, there’s always something new and exciting to try out when it comes to fashion. Take a deep breath, boys, and drive down to the local mall with an open mind and a few bucks to spare. You may be surprised at what you find.
