The Greek Week Blood Drive collected more than 1,700 units of blood last Wednesday through Friday, blood drive representative Helena Kooi said.
In third place, with 92 donors, were Alpha Delta Pi, Delta Tau Delta and Acacia. Second place, with 100 donors, were Kappa Delta, Phi Gamma Delta and Tau Kappa Epsilon. First place, with 101 donors, were Chi Omega, Phi Kappa Theta and Alpha Tau Omega.
Fling started Monday night with the preliminary rounds. Each pairing must perform a skit that lasts no more than 12 minutes, according to the MU Greek Week 2013 Rulebook.
According to the rulebook, the pairings also must leave their skit on a cliffhanger. The five pairings that make it to the Finals, which will be held on Friday, April 19, will perform their skit again, this time solving the cliffhanger.
The five pairings with the most points after the preliminary rounds will advance to the Finals, to be held April 19. The top five pairings will be announced at 10 p.m. Wednesday on the steps of Jesse Hall.
This year’s theme for Fling is “Myths & Legends,” and every skit must incorporate a legend or myth, as well as an interactive element.
Monday night, Fling began with the National Anthem, sung by Nick Desmuke of Lambda Chi Alpha.
The first skit was performed by Sigma Sigma Sigma, Delta Sigma Phi and Delta Chi. The skit titled “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” is about Dr. Jekyll trying to get rid of his alter ego, Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll concocts a potion to rid of Mr. Hyde, but the plot leaves on a cliffhanger when Dr. Jekyll’s assistant, Jane, drinks the potion instead.
Katy Freedman of Sigma Sigma Sigma and Keith Maestas of Delta Sigma Phi sang “American Beautiful” for the first In Between Act, or IBA.
Next, Zeta Tau Alpha and Pi Kappa Alpha performed their skit, “Beanville: An Unexpected Journey.” The skit is about a science experiment gone wrong that creates a large beanstalk. The main family travels up the beanstalk to find out how to get rid of it but find themselves stuck until they can defeat the giant who rules the land atop the beanstalk.
Abbey Tingle of Alpha Chi Omega and Andrew Sherping of Delta Chi performed “Thrift Shop” in their IBA.
Alpha Chi Omega, Sigma Nu and FarmHouse performed their skit titled, “Legend of Locker.” The skit is about the legend of Davy Jones’ locker. When a group of students taking the ACT end up in the locker with Captain Morgan, they find themselves on a pirate ship, but must find a way out before Davy Jones forces them to walk the plank.
The men of Delta Chi, under the name of “B-Flat Major,” performed “A Cappella Remix,” singing both “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz and “Ignition Remix” by R.Kelly.
Brianne Boland of Pi Beta Phi, and Benjamin Reifschneider and Phillip Eiberger of FarmHouse performed an IBA of “Rivers and Roads” by The Head and the Heart.
Alpha Delta Pi, Delta Tau Delta and Acacia performed their skit next, titled, “Hercules & Pegasus.” The skit is about Zeus, father of Hercules, ordering his son to fight the Queen of the Amazons, Hippolytta, to retrieve the wrestling belt he lost to her. Hercules’ brother, Hades, ends up with the belt, and the skit leaves on the cliffhanger of who will get the belt back from Hades.
Austin Ratzki introduced the beneficiaries, which included Ella’s Hope for Autism, Woodhaven, Puppies with Purpose and the MedZou Community Health Clinic.
Lindsay Pierce of Kappa Kappa Gamma, Jordan White and Reid Jackson of Sigma Nu and Dan Philyaw of Lambda Chi Alpha performed “Too Close” by Alex Clare.
To wrap up the first night of Fling, Phi Mu, Kappa Alpha Order and Beta Sigma Psi performed their skit titled, “Cupid Against the Internet.” This skit is about Cupid getting revenge on Brad Gosling, who invented a dating website that works better than one of Cupid’s arrows. The skit ends on the cliffhanger of Cupid tying up Gosling and going after his girlfriend.
The Fling Prelims will continue Tuesday and Wednesday night in Jesse Hall. The Finals will be at 7 p.m. Friday in Jesse Hall.
