Throughout the week, the Missouri track team has been tirelessly working in hopes of winning medals and setting records at one of the world’s most well-known track meets.
A large part of the track team will be attending the historic Drake Relays at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa this weekend. The meet is one of the largest and most prestigious in the world, and some of the greatest athletes in the sport’s history have ran here.
Anyone from Lolo Jones to Michael Johnson have graced the Drake Relays with their presence and skill. A win at the Drake Relays at any level would be a great honor.
Missouri’s men’s and women’s throwers traveled to the Emporia State Mid-Week Open in Emporia, Kan. on Wednesday.
In the women’s shotput, Missouri placed four throwers in the top five, and sophomore Kearsten Peoples placed first with a throw of 56 feet 5.25 inches. Senior Cortni Ervin finished second with a mark of 50 feet 6 inches. In the shotput, junior Katie Evans finished second with a toss of 157 feet 3 inches, and Peoples finished fourth.
In the javelin, the Tigers placed all three on the podium, as juniors Hailey Twietmeyer, Sandra Hampton and Bethany Pfeiffer finished first, second and third, respectively.
On the men’s side, junior Alex McDonald won first place in the discus with a throw of 169 feet 1 inch, a season best for him.
Missouri’s throwers also competed at the Kip Janvrin Open at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa on Thursday. Sophomore Jill Rushin won the women’s discus with a mark of 48.8 meters, and Peoples finished second with a throw of 48.51 meters.
Most of Missouri’s athletes started their 2013 Drake Relays experience Friday. All 37 Missouri athletes will be competing in hopes that they might be called the best in America.
