While facing some of the best collegiate competition in the nation, the Tigers still shined in the Iowa sun.
This weekend, the Missouri track and field team traveled to Des Moines, Iowa, for the historic Drake Relays, a track meet known for its world-class competitors.
For three days, Missouri athletes competed and stood out from the field.
Day one began with freshman Bryant Blahnik placing eighth in the men’s 10,000-meter run with a time of 30:09.15.
Day two was even more impressive for the team. Sophomore Katrine Haarklau broke the school record in the women’s javelin throw with a toss of 49.56 meters, beating the previous record of 49.34 meters set in 1998. Haarklau now moves into the top 15 in the NCAA and is now ranked third in javelin in the Southeastern Conference.
“I am very happy, but I felt like I could throw further,” Haarklau said in a news release. “And I did throw further. It was just out of the sector. Fifty meters has been a goal for me for so many years now, and I am just ready to hit that mark.”
Senior Malcolm Pennix placed third overall in the men’s long jump with a mark of 25 feet 5.5 inches, two inches off his personal record. This is the first meet that Pennix has competed in since the NCAA Indoor Championships, and he is now ranked in the top 15 in the nation with the mark.
Sophomore Kearsten Peoples also had a day to remember. Peoples placed third in both the women’s shot put and discus. With the new score, Peoples now moves into the national top 5 in the shot put.
With dominant performances across the board, Missouri made day two a tough act to follow. Their final day, though, was the best part of the show.
Senior Laura Roxberg broke the school record in the women’s 1,500-meter run to start day three with a time of 4:13.53, breaking the old school record by three seconds. Roxberg finished second in the race, behind University of Georgia’s Carly Hamilton. Both runners broke the previous Drake Relays record for the race and now have the two fastest times in the NCAA for the event.
Roxberg broke her own record that she had previously set during the 2012 Big 12 Championship. It’s the second school record Roxberg set this season. She set the school record for the mile at the University of Washington Husky Classic earlier this year.
Markesh Woodson finished third in the men’s 100-meter dash with a time of 10.28 seconds, a new personal best, moving him into the top 15 in the nation in the event.
Fellow freshman Tony Carodine finished fourth in the men’s collegiate triple jump and seventh overall with a jump of 50:11.5.
Missouri will be able to rest during this off week but looks to keep the momentum going into the SEC Outdoor Track and Field Championship. The event will take place May 9 – 12 in Columbia.
