Missouri football coach Gary Pinkel signs all his tweets on the @mizzoufootball handle with “GP” to make completely certain the author of the 140 characters blasted to cyberspace.
On April 25, the “GP” endorsement was all over the account’s page.
Months after a dismal 5-7 2012 campaign, the NFL draft — college football’s unofficial referendum on coaching proficiency, — seemingly redeemed Pinkel.
His tweets lauding ex-Tigers Sheldon Richardson and Zaviar Gooden, among others, affirmed Missouri’s place in the college football landscape and Pinkel’s at its helm.
The New York Jets picked prized defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson No. 13 overall, making 2013 the fifth-straight year Missouri has had a player selected in the first round of the draft.
“Sheldon was with us for a short time, but he was a difference maker and he made us a better defense without question,” Pinkel said in a press release. “He’s ready for the NFL, and we’re looking forward to seeing him represent Mizzou for a long time to come. Sheldon had a lot of pride in this place, and we’re very proud of him for achieving this dream that he’s had for a long time.”
The Tennessee Titans took linebacker Zaviar Gooden in the third round, 97th overall, in hopes to improve the AFC’s second-worst defense in 2012.
“He’s got the speed of a corner,” NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock said on NFL Network at the time of the pick. “I don’t think he has great instincts, but when he sees it, there isn’t a faster linebacker. If he learns how to take on a block, he’ll be a home run.”
Receiver T.J. Moe inked a deal with the New England Patriots after the draft, as did running back Kendial Lawrence with the Dallas Cowboys, offensive lineman Elvis Fisher with the Patriots, safety Kenronte Walker with the Cleveland Browns, defensive back Kip Edwards with the Buffalo Bills and defensive lineman Brad Madison with the Kansas City Chiefs. Madison will also have an opportunity to audition as a long snapper as well as a defensive tackle.
