Columbia Police Department officers responded to a report of shots fired and two vehicles possibly chasing each other, Monday at 9:50 p.m.

The vehicles were later found in a crash at Providence Road and the exit ramp from eastbound I-70.

The two vehicles were originally going down Providence Road southbound from Vandiver Drive. According to a Columbia Police Department release, it appeared that one of the involved vehicles had hit an uninvolved vehicle.

Officers detained passenger Michael Ramey-Pennington, 23, and a 16-year-old male driver. Ramey-Pennington was arrested on charges of first degree burglary and first degree property damage for an earlier incident that occurred at that morning at 12:10 a.m. Both driver and passenger were uncooperative with officers but sustained no reported injuries.

Officers also recovered a handgun near the accident location and a shell casing in the roadway near the crash site.

Ashland police officers later found the second vehicle involved in the chase abandoned in Ashland, Mo.

The incident is still under investigation and no further details are currently available, CPD spokesman Sgt. Joe Bernhard said.

Bernhard also said that crime in general and especially violent crime goes up and down throughout the year based on many factors, weather being one of them.

“The amount of shootings we have had recently is a spike in those kind of incidents, but it is not out of the ordinary for this time of year,” Bernhard said. “We generally have an increase in violent crime when the weather gets warm or hot.”

The investigation is ongoing, according to the news release.
