A third arrest was made early morning Aug. 2 for the June shooting and killing of 25-year-old Anthony Unger in a parking garage on Conley and Brickton roads, according to a Columbia Police Department news release.

The alleged shooter, 20-year-old Domionte Cheatum, was taken into custody by Columbia police and is charged with second-degree murder, per the release.

Cheatum, CPD spokeswoman Latisha Stroer said, was arrested while he was being held in the Boone County Jail for unrelated warrants with the sheriff’s department. Stroer, however, denied that those warrants were served with the knowledge of his role as a person of interest in the Unger case.

Cheatum’s arrest comes after a month-long investigation of the shooting. In the days following the incident, CPD charged both Samuel Butler, 26, and Joycelynn Brown, 22, with second-degree murder for their connection to the homicide.

Court documents filed with the Boone County Courthouse detail Brown’s decision to travel with Unger to Columbia. Unger, per Brown’s statement in those documents, intended to sell a half-pound of marijuana to Butler, but was cut short by Cheatum, who attempted to rob Unger.

An individual identified in the documents only as “T.M.” stated that Cheatum had arranged with Butler to rob Unger prior to the drug deal.

Brown’s statement went on to say that when Cheatum flashed a handgun, she exited the vehicle and ran, hearing gunshots as she fled.

Brown, in the documents, said that she later returned to the vehicle to find Unger bleeding and unconscious. Unger, said a CPD news release in June, was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
