I’m usually the type of person who gets scared by the simplest of things, so when it comes to horror films, it doesn’t take much to terrify me. Director Adam Wingard’s newest film, “You’re Next,” however, sadly didn’t live up to the expectations of a horror film and barely made me flinch.
The film follows the Davison family. The parents are wealthy but have a list of problems that their money can’t solve, the largest being the division between their very differing children. The family meets up at a large country estate for the parents’ 35th wedding anniversary, but almost immediately things take a devastating turn.
One by one, the guests are hunted down and killed by a group of men wearing masks decorated to look like animals. All the deaths are entirely gruesome and disturbing, and the only hope the family has is in their son’s girlfriend, who actually fights back against the attackers.
Although there is an amazing plot twist at the end of the movie, the large majority of the film was so poorly made that I found myself laughing instead of cringing in my seat. The acting was awkward, with little chemistry between the characters, and what were supposed to be scary scenes ended up just coming off as a joke.
If you’re looking for a horror movie that will make you feel like you’re at a comedy, then “You’re Next” is the right film for you.
