The Naturelles are moving up to the big leagues by singing the national anthem at the Kansas City Royals home game Saturday.
The University of Missouri’s all women a cappella group will perform a traditional rendition of the national anthem at Kauffman Stadium.
They have sung the national anthem at MU Quidditch matches in the past.
“We have been asked to sing the national anthem at a Mizzou hockey game,” club president Mackenzie Scott says.
Scott says she was excited when the group was first asked to perform.
“It totally went over my head, and then I realized it was a pretty big deal,” Scott says.
Although the scope of this event may be bigger than their average engagements, this opportunity has not made their typical practice schedule anymore rigorous.
“It’s actually pretty easy,” Scott says, referring to the rehearsal schedule.
The anthem will be the first official performance by The Naturelles this year.
“I’m so excited,” says Erin Burris, choreography director and alto group member. “I think it’s a great chance for us to get some new experience as a group.”
Practice was not the only preparation required before the performance. They also recruited Chicagoland graphic design student, Rachel Nugent, to create custom tank tops to wear on the day of the event. The tanks feature an original design incorporating the first measures of the national anthem on the back and the suitable phrase “Land of the free, home of the brave” on the front.
Although events are a major part of what they do, The Naturelles insist they are more than just an a cappella group — they are close friends.
They hope to recruit no more than five new group members during tryouts this year.
“We kind of want to keep the group smaller this year because we’re more than just an a cappella group,” says Mary Kaleta, public relations chair and alto group member. “We’re friends, and its easier to get close that way.”
The Naturelles are covering much more than the national anthem this year. They have an arsenal of fun, eclectic songs they tackle, including pieces by Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato.
The group takes the phrase “pitch perfect” to a whole new level at sporting events, private occasions and major competitions such as the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella, along with events on and around campus.
“Keep an eye out for a mash up holiday concert with Add 9 (another MU a cappella group),” Scott says.
Regardless of the outcome of Saturday’s game, the Naturelles are undoubtedly coming home with a win.
