It echoed all over the stadium.
Rock Bridge High School’s student section chanted “Logan Football” at the top of its lungs to honor the Manziel-esque style of play of Rock Bridge junior quarterback Logan Twehous in Friday night’s 48-14 victory over Fort Zumwalt West (1-1).
Twehous provided the offensive efficiency the Bruins (2-0) needed against a team that beat a strong Christian Brothers College squad in week one. He went 19-for-32 for 330 yards through the air and rushed seven times for 156 yards.
He rushed for two touchdowns and threw for four more.
“It’s hard to really say that he needs to improve, but he’s not yet perfect,” coach A.J. Ofodile said. “He’s young and does need to get better, but he’s playing at a pretty high level.”
One of Twehous’ highlights was a 97-yard quarterback keeper from Rock Bridge’s own 3-yard line that he took for a touchdown in the third quarter.
“That run was unbelievable,” sophomore running back Eli Stout said. “I got so excited when that happened.”
“I would just like to give a shout-out to my left guard Jonah Dubinski,” Twehous said. “He had a great block on that one and without him, I wouldn’t have that play at all.”
Twehous said the team made the right adjustments from last week’s scare against DeSmet Jesuit, which ended in a 41-35 victory for the Bruins.
“We came out today on all cylinders,” he said. “We did great in warm-ups, and I think [this victory] represents what we learned from last week’s mistake when we got up 21-0 on DeSmet and they were able to come right back. … It’s just being able to continue where we left off.”
Other factors in Rock Bridge’s offense included Stout and junior receiver Alex Ofodile. Stout rushed 16 times for 133 yards and notched one touchdown. Ofodile scored two touchdowns, including one on a 16-yard screen pass from Twehous on a fourth-and-goal.
The quarterback also said he appreciates his skill position personnel for making the plays they did.
“I’m just lucky to have the receivers and running backs that I have,” Twehous said.
“I have the best skill players in the state around me, and I just love this team.”
One area of question for Rock Bridge was the penalties. The Bruins tallied up nine penalties, compared to Ft. Zumwalt West’s three.
However, aside from the mental mistakes and penalties, coach A.J. Ofodile said he was pleased with the way his defense attacked a potentially dangerous Ft. Zumwalt offense.
“Fort Zuwalt West has always been a great offensive football team in terms of how they go about things,” he said. “You always kind of hold your breath when you play them. I’m glad that we were able to hold them to 14 points.”
