When Kaitlyn King first started working at the Student Recreation Complex, she was swiping members’ cards to let them through the gym doors.
Three years later, the senior history and political science double major oversees membership, staff training and employee selection.
King is a member of the Team Mizzou staff advisory council.
“(I act as) a student liaison between the student staff and the professional staff,” King says.
King has also participated in Alternative Spring Break and volunteers at the Central Missouri Humane Society. She is a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, a political science fraternity.
A recipient of the Team Mizzou scholarship, King says that working for MizzouRec has been a rewarding experience.
“Working at MizzouRec has been one of my best experiences at Mizzou,” King says. “It has made we want to get more involved. (My time here) has opened doors.”
**Myra Hancock**
_Pittsburgh native and classical music enthusiast_
Myra Hancock grew up listening to the likes of Tchaikovsky and Brahms on the radio in her hometown of Pittsburgh. She doesn’t play an instrument, but if she could, she would play the piano.
On Thursday, Hancock and her husband decided to show their two visiting friends some of Columbia’s culture. They attended a “lovely performance” by the University Philharmonic Orchestra. The program included one of Hancock’s favorite composer’s famous symphonies: Tchaikovsky’s Fourth.
“We’re not regulars,” Hancock says. “But we enjoy the performances we do come to.”
Hancock is able to draw parallels to music in different aspects of her life. She was an interior designer before retiring.
“There’s a correlation (between music and interior design),” Hancock says. “You need a good blend, presentation and quality (in both).”
Goodness is a quality she strives for in life.
“I try to be the best person I can be and, at my age, I try to do as much as I can,” Hancock says.
