The School of Natural Resources is holding its first annual Homecoming Art Show to display art pieces with the theme “The Great Outdoors.”
Twenty pieces of art will be displayed during the Saturday show. The show will run from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Anheuser-Busch Natural Resource Building.
“We wanted to do a fundraiser for the (Food Bank of Central and Northeast Missouri),” Student Coordinator David Calandro said. “We originally wanted to do a sidewalk chalk competition, but then that morphed into an art show.”
Twenty-five pieces of art were entered into the show.
“Everything from wood sculptures to pottery to paintings to drawings,” Calandro said.
Calandro submitted a stained-glass piece. Entered pieces include nature photography, watercolor paintings and painted feathers.
“Pieces are very varied,” said Laura Hertel, coordinator of student services.
Many of the artists are students of the School of Natural Resources, but other students and Columbia residents also submitted work.
“We took anyone that submitted art,” Hertel said.
Show attendees may donate money in exchange for tickets, which they can then use to vote for their favorite art pieces.
Prizes vary and include $100 for the first prize, a wine basket and gift cards donated by local companies for other contestants.
Art pieces will not be sold at the event, but artists are encouraged to provide contact information and cards.
All cash and canned donations from the Art Show will go to the Food Bank.
“We have an ongoing mission of feeding approximately 110,000 people in Boone and 31 other central and northeast Missouri counties each month,” Food Bank spokesman Scott Gordon said. “We will be happy to have whatever financial or food support they will send our way. Grassroots, outside-the-box, creative fundraising efforts are a welcome help to our mission.”
Hertel said she hopes this event will make a difference for the Food Bank.
“I just hope that we can make some money for the Food Bank and have some fun,” said Hertel. “This is the first time we’ve done an art show, but I hope it will be an annual event.”
A reception with wine and cheese will be held on the second floor of the Anheuser-Busch Center. Canned goods are the price of admission to the reception.
The art show takes place the day before Homecoming, and is sponsored by the School of Natural Resource’s Alumni Association and student ambassadors.
